Twilight: Each Main Character’s First & Last Line In The Movies

Twilight features iconic characters like Edward and Bella and often, their first and last lines perfectly encapsulate who they are.

Despite being released 13 years ago, the Twilight Saga still remains one of the most popular franchises in film history. From werewolves to hybrid children, the movies feature some of the most iconic and unique characters in the YA genre that fans are unlikely to ever forget.

Charlie Swan

First: “Your Hair’s Longer.”

Last: “Woman Knows Her Trout.”

Charlie never had the greatest relationship with Bella. Despite loving her deeply, they never saw each other often because she lived with her mom. His first line signifies their strained relationship and encapsulates his awkward character trying to make conversation.

When his family is visiting him for Christmas, Bella gives Charlie a present which is a five-day fishing trip for him and his girlfriend, Sue. He is excited by the gift and his last line illustrates that he is impressed with Sue as she knows about fishing.

Esme Cullen

First: “Bella, We’re Making Italiano For You.”

Last: “He’s Not A People Person.”

Esme always had a kind nature and a gentle personality. Her first line embodies this as it shows her going out of her way to make an effort for Bella, despite vampires not needing to eat.

To prove that Renesmee isn’t an immortal child, Esme and the rest of the Cullen’s begin searching for witnesses in their fight against the Volturi. When she brings one of them home, he jumps on the roof instead of socializing. Esme’s last line once again displays her kindness and she defends the vampire by explaining that he isn’t a people person.

Emmett Cullen

First: “Her Name Is Bella.”

Last: “I’m Good.”

Emmett’s first line comes when the Cullen’s are preparing dinner for Bella. It’s in response to Rosalie and suggests that he is more open to humans than her because he is justifying Esme’s choice to make Italian food.

When Bella turns into a vampire, they want to test her shielding abilities. To give her an incentive, Kate shocks Edward, causing him great pain. After mastering it and wanting to continue practicing, Edward asks if Emmett wants to have a go. Despite being one of the strongest male characters in the Twilight series, Emmett’s last line is him politely declining.

Rosalie Hale

First: “Is She Even Italian?”

Last: “Carlisle Needs You.”

Rosalie and Bella never had an easy relationship. She was always worried that Bella would cause problems for them and was often hostile towards her. This is evident in her first line when she is reluctant to make an effort to accept her by questioning her heritage.

Despite taking an immediate disliking to Bella, Roaslie’s last line shows how far she’s come. Like all the Cullen siblings, Rosalie always wanted to protect her family and tries desperately to help Bella’s daughter. She is last heard trying to convince a witness to come forward to help in their case against the Volturi.

Jasper Hale

First: “It’s A Pleasure To Meet You.”

Last: “Their Offensive Weapons Are Too Powerful. No One Could Stand Against Jane.”

Jasper is introduced as the newest member of the Cullen family who is trying desperately to keep his vampire tendencies under control. He is first heard when he meets Bella and he tries his best to stay calm around her.

When the Cullen’s realize what the Volturi do to immortal children, Jacob suggests they fight back. Despite having arguably the greatest fighting ability in Twilight, Jasper is last heard explaining to Jacob how they can’t because of Jane. She is a sadistic member of the Volturi who takes great pleasure in torturing others, and he notes that her abilities are too powerful for them.

Alice Cullen

First: “Hi. Are You Gonna Be Riding With Us?”

Last: “I’ve Been Searching For Witnesses Of My Own Among The Ticuna Tribes Of Brazil.”

Alice was always the kindest of the Cullen siblings and this is displayed through her first line. When she first meets Bella, she politely says hello and is friendly towards her, unlike the other siblings.

Like the rest of the Cullen’s, Alice travels around the world in search of witnesses. Her last line signifies the loyalty she had to her family and how far she would go to help them. She was instrumental in the protection of others and is one of the reasons why Alice was the best Cullen in Twilight.

Carlisle Cullen

First: “I Heard The Chief’s Daughter Was In.”

Last: “Not Today.”

As the head of the Cullen family, Carlisle led by example and was always calm and reasonable when it came to humans. Fans first meet him when he is working as a doctor and he tends to Bella. His first line has a positive tone and that remains with him throughout the movie.

Carlisle’s main objective was always to protect his family. When the Volturi decide to retreat in the final battle, Vladimir still wants to attack them. Carlisle’s last line encompasses the person he was as he ensures them that no one is going to die today.

Jacob Black

First: “Hi I’m Jacob. We Used To Make Mud Pies When We Were Little.”

Last: “Should I Start Calling You Dad?”

Fans meet Jacob in the first movie and his first line is said when he is introducing himself to Bella. Jacob’s character starts out as sweet and innocent, but he significantly changes as the movies go on.

Although he was never the laid-back type, Jacob is last heard making a joke to Edward. Jacob imprinting on Renesmee was always a strange concept and prompted Jacob to say some of his cringiest lines in the Twilight franchise. Despite this, Jacob tries to make a joke to Edward to ease the fact he is now in love with his daughter.

Edward Cullen

First: “There Must Be Something Open. Physics? Biochem?

Last: “Forever.”

Edward features in the movie several times before fans hear him speak. When he is first heard, he is trying to switch classes because he can’t stand to be near Bella. His first line couldn’t be more opposite to his last.

Bella and Edward’s relationship was arguably one of the worst in the Twilight franchise and it wasn’t a straight road to happiness. Despite this, they both find peace and Edward’s last line is the same as Bella’s. It demonstrates his undying love for her and shows how far their relationship has come since the beginning.

Bella Swan

First: “I’d Never Given Much Thought To How I Would Die But Dying In The Place Of Someone I Love Seems Like A Good Way To Go.”

Last: “Forever.”

Bella’s first line is a voiceover and it seems fitting that it’s the first line in the entire franchise. It’s no secret that Bella didn’t particularly enjoy her human life and that she only felt alive once she met Edward. Her first line complements her journey in the movie as she eventually dies in the presence of Edward.

Bella’s last line cements her love for Edward. Now a vampire, dying is no longer a thought that Bella has as she now gets to spend an eternity with the one she loves.
