Charmed Stars React to The CW Reboot News

The stars of the original Charmed TV show respond to the news that The CW is planning a reboot of the fantasy TV series.

Reboots are here to stay. Every year more television series get to continue their stories with sequels or complete reboots airing and it seems like everything from sitcoms (Fuller House) to sci-fi (The X-Files revival) is getting a second chance. Now yet another TV show reboot/revival has been announced, this time in the form of the 1990s-born TV series Charmed.

Charmed, which aired from 1998 to 2006, told the story of the Halliwell sister, who happened to be witches. Phoebe,  Piper, and Prue Halliwell (later Prue was replaced by half-sister Paige) used their magical powers to fight the forces of evil. Warlocks, witches, and demons came from the Underworld to plague the sisters, who used their combined powers, The Power of Three, to vanquish their foes. Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano, who played Piper and Phoebe respectively, have now responded to the news of a Charmed reboot being in development at The CW.

In response to this news, Combs was the first to tweet her reaction, as follows:

We wish them well.— Holly Marie Combs (@H_Combs) January 5, 2017

About an hour later, Milano also posted her thoughts on the reboot, with the following (simple) message:

#Charmed fans! There are no fans like you. You’re the best of the best.— Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) January 5, 2017

Milano followed her tweet with a photo on instagram, a picture of herself and Billy Zane that was taken when he guest starred on Charmed (see below).

The Charmed reboot will not be a continuation of the Halliwell sisters’ stories; instead, it will resolve around three unrelated girls named Annie, Tina, and Paige, living in the 1970s (though probably not the same Paige that Rose McGowan played on the original show). While prequel series have come before Charmed, it’s a bit unusual. Generally reboots either start from scratch, or continue the original story and bring back the former cast members, as well as new characters. At this time however, there is no word yet on if any characters from the original Charmed TV show will appear in the new version.

It seems unlikely that any Charmed stars will be reprising their roles on the reboot, what with the new series taking place twenty years before the first series aired. Then again, when it comes to shows about witches and demons, time travel doesn’t exactly seem outside of the realm of possibility (nor does this rule about stars of the original Charmed popping up as other characters in guest-starring appearances).

The CW has ordered a one-hour pilot for the Charmed reboot, with writers Jessica O’Toole, Amy Rardin and Jennie Snyder (all of whom write for The CW’s Jane the Virgin) handling the new series. There is no news of when the show will air at this time, but it is safe to say that after more than ten years without any new Charmed, fans will not want to wait too long.
